A&S Programs

The College of Arts and Sciences offers the following fellowships, programs, and awards to its faculty and graduate teaching assistants. For more information about a particular program, please contact the program coordinator.

Active Learning Initiative

The Active Learning Initiative (ALI) provides resources to help A&S faculty build learning environments that strengthen the capacity of students to gather and synthesize information and develop robust critical thinking skills across disciplines and in a variety of educational settings.

Distinguished Teaching Fellowship

Each fall, the College of Arts and Sciences selects two Distinguished Teaching Fellows and one Distinguished Teaching with Technology Fellow. As members of the A&S Teaching Fellows Committee, the fellows serve as mentors for other faculty members, provide advice on the assessment of teaching, participate in new faculty orientation, and work with the College in other ways to improve its overall teaching mission.

Learn more about the Distinguished Teaching Fellowship, or request a peer observation by a current teaching fellow.

Prison Teaching Fellowship

Each spring and fall semester, the College of Arts and Sciences selects one faculty member for the Prison Teaching Fellowship. Fellows receive a one-course reduction (main campus) to teach for the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project in an Alabama prison.

Teaching Awards

Each year, The University of Alabama honors faculty members and teaching assistants for their work with students. Recipients are chosen based on a variety of criteria, including but not limited to, the mastery of the subject matter, the ability to engage students in and outside of the classroom, and innovations in course design.

Find a list of awards for faculty on the College’s website, or visit the Graduate School’s website for a list of awards for graduate students.
