#2017Scholars at The University of Alabama

Next week, some amazing people from across the three University of Alabama campuses will gather for the 2017 UA System Scholars Institute, to be held May 15-16 at Bryant Conference Center. Through a series of events, the Institute aims to foster discussion and collaboration between institutions on topics related to teaching and learning. Although you are asked to register to ensure the event planners are ready for everyone (e.g., accommodating dietary needs and allergies), the event itself is free to UA faculty, instructors, and staff. Over 200 people are expected to attend!

Among the highlights of the event is Dr. Christopher Emdin’s keynote, “Teaching and Learning from the Student’s Standpoint,” which will take place May 15 at 9:30 am in Sellers Auditorium. Dr. Emdin, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology at Teachers College (Columbia University), may be best known as the creator of the #HipHopEd social media movement and a thought leader on issues of race, culture, inequality and education. The Institute planners have provided an hour with Dr. Emdin for those who wish to discuss his talk.

The impressive lineup features presentations by several A&S faculty:

  • Digital Tools for Supporting Students’ Writing by Dorothy Worden, Cindy Tekobbe, & Amber Buck
  • The Maria de San Jose Digital Project by Emma Wilson, Mary Alexander & Connie Janiga-Perkins
  • Web 3.0 for Collaborative Learning of Language and Culture by Paul G. Renigar, Connie Janiga-Perkins, Ignacio Rodeo & Amica Rapadas
  • Framing a Concrete Experience in a Business-Oriented Language Course: Connecting with Real-World 21st Century Digital Practices by Isabelle Drewlow
  • Effectiveness of Online Writing Center Consultations: Providing Comments That Elicit Robust Revision in Asynchronous Online Writing Center Consultations by Donna Branyon
  • Yes, but Did They Read It? Using Hypothes.is to Drive Critical Engagement with Online Content and LMS 2.0? How might we design online spaces for learning communities? by Nathan Loewen
  • Technology and the Digital Humanities in Art History Teaching and Research by Tanja Jones, Rachel Stephens & Lucy Curzon

Of course, this is not to mention the detailed agendas for May 15 and May 16 that explore innovations happening at UAB and UAH.
