Implicit Bias Workshop

August 17, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Promoting Fairness & Excellence: Insights from Implicit Bias, Racial Anxiety, and Stereotype Threat

Most of us in higher education hold strong values of equity and aspire to excellence. Yet, research suggests that unconscious phenomena related to race, ethnicity, and other aspects of identity can get in the way of those goals. Key concepts from the mind sciences, including implicit bias, racial anxiety, and stereotype threat, help to explain why identity differences can present challenges, even when we have the best intentions. Jessica MacFarlane, of Perception Institute, will share research demonstrating how these phenomena develop and their impact on key decisions and everyday interactions with students, faculty, and other staff. Attendees will discuss evidence-based strategies to override, in order to align behavior with values and promote fairness and excellence at the University.

Space at the workshop is limited to forty attendees. Spots are available on a first come, first served basis.
