Accessibility Workshop: Empathy and the Law

March 1, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join Teach By Distance for a Power Lunch on Thursday, March 1 from noon until 2 pm, where they will lead the first in a new series of accessibility workshops, EMPATHY AND THE LAW. Lunch will be provided, and you will walk away with an understanding of what accessibility means for you as an online instructor.

Workshop Description

Not only is it important to understand the challenges faced by our disabled students, but the law requires us to create an inclusive course environment that meets the needs of all learners. In this interactive, hands-on workshop, you will have an opportunity to experience what it’s like to be an online student with a disability and will leave with a better understanding of how the law applies to you.

Workshop Goals

  • Identify applicable accessibility laws and what this means for you as an instructor or course developer.
  • Analyze how disabilities can impact how people learn.
  • Evaluate how course materials and activities may present accessibility concerns, and what you can do to improve access.
  • Evaluate how the Teach By Distance team can help you provide an inclusive course experience.

This workshop is BYOC (bring your own computer). To fully engage in the interactive portion of the class, please also bring a smartphone or other mobile device if you have access to one. Activities will include a virtual reality experience.

Space is limited. If you register and are unable to attend, please let us know so we can give your seat to someone else. If registration is full and you would like to be placed on the waiting list, email Cheryl Bosarge at clbosarge@ccs.ua.edu.
